The Eryri Way

The Eryri Way is an extention to the Llyn Coastal Path (LlCP) that i have been working on for a number of years, a path that starts in Caernarfon, follows the peninsula down and the mountains back, originally called the Caernarfonshire Way. As the peninsula now has its own trail, it's easier and more logical to propose the Eryri Way as an extention to this, thus forming a circular route of about 260km. The route follows low passes and tracks through Snowdonia, and is no more technical than the LlCP. To take the path over the mountains would make this latter part much harder than the LlCP and would render the two halves incompatible. It is perfectly possible to take the highland route from Beddgelert onwards by following the route for the 3000 footers. This route takes the walker over all the summits over the archaic measure of 3000ft (914m), of which there are 14 (or arguably 15) and finishes at Bwlch y Ddeufaen near Aber, so is compatible with the rest of the walk. That, though, is up to the walker.

Oh, and yes. The route does follow the North Wales Path and the Four Valleys Path for a portion of the walk. I don't see a problem with this. In these areas, there are few alternatives that fit the 'non technical' description.

Detailed route descriptions and GPS files will appear here soon.

Click on the stage to see an OS map of that stage.

Stage 0. Porthmadog to Penrhyndeudraeth. 5km

This allows you to connect with the LlCP.

Aberglaslyn

Stage 1. Penrhyn to Nant Gwynant. 22 km.

The walk starts Penrhyndeudraeth and follows ancient tracks on to the spectacular Aberglaslyn gorge and to Beddgelert and Nant Gwynant to complete the first day's walking.

Stage 2. Nant Gwynant to Capel Curig. 21.5km.

This section of the walk takes you along the Llyn Gwynant and its forest, before crossing over the Moelwynion on a low pass, visiting Dolwyddelan Castle and finally crossing over to Capel Curig for the night.

Stage 3. Capel Curig to Conwy. 32 km.

This is the most remote section and would wisely be shortened at Rowen YH. However, this walk takes you over the wild eastern Carneddau, with its lakes and mountains. You get quite high up, but never exposed.

Stage 4. Conwy to Rachub. 32.5 km.

Partly along the route of the North Wales Path, visiting Aber falls and following low hillsides for its duration. The sea is often prominent to your right. Could split by stopping at Aber.

Stage 5. Bethesda to Llanberis. 15km

Following the foothills with extensive views over the Arfon Plain and Anglesey. Short, but can extend by walking around Llyn Padarn before visiting Llanberis, one of the best viewpoints for Snowdon and Dolbadarn Castle

Caernarfon Castle

Stage 6. Llanberis to Caernarfon. 18km.

The final day takes you to within a breadth of Snowdon again, before crossing over to Waunfawr and the final few kilometres to Caernarfon and the walk's end. From 209 you can return to the start on the Welsh Highland Railway.
